Does growing up mean becoming more yourself or less yourself? We encounter this question when we write a college application essay or sit in the uneasy silence of an interview room. Asked to define ourselves through a handful of strengths and traits, we hesitate: Is this really me? That discomfort is telling. No collection of carefully chosen words can fully capture who we are, and the experiences and choices that reshape us force us to reconsider what maturity truly means.

It is easy to see why adulthood can feel like a loss of self. The older we get, the more keenly we feel the weight of other people’s judgments, social expectations and the practical demands of making a living. We learn to suppress our feelings and withhold our opinions to avoid conflict and gain acceptance. Psychologist Erik Erikson emphasized the importance of identity formation throughout life, while James Marcia identified identity foreclosure as a status in which individuals commit to an identity without having meaningfully explored alternatives. Such commitments can reflect the unexamined acceptance of others’ expectations. Yet this kind of adaptation is socialization, not maturity. Learning to fit into the world is not the same as learning who we are.

Even the self we remember as most authentic in childhood was shaped, in large part, by our surroundings. Genuine self-discovery begins when we step into a wider world and question what we once took for granted. We may realize that the approval we pursued so eagerly is not what we truly value, or that beliefs we considered our own were inherited rather than consciously chosen. Such realizations do not signal a loss of self. They mark the beginning of a deeper understanding of ourselves.

Self-understanding, however, is only a seed. It takes root when it meets choice and responsibility. Being ourselves does not mean acting on every impulse; it means choosing in accordance with our values and accepting the consequences. Two people may pursue the same career, yet one chooses it for the approval it brings, while the other arrives at it after reflecting on what truly matters to them. The path looks identical from the outside. Its meaning in each life is not. When we bear the risks of our own decisions, our values become more than abstract ideals; they begin to shape how we live.

In the end, maturity is measured not by how much we have changed, but by how deeply we understand ourselves and how deliberately we live. Compromise and change are inevitable, but neither requires us to abandon who we are. The task is neither to reject others’ expectations outright nor to accept them without question, but to weigh them against our own convictions and decide what deserves to be carried forward. Growing up is not about leaving ourselves behind. It is about learning, with greater clarity, who we want to be.
